The 21CM Mission
The 21st Century Musician Initiative places DePauw in a national dialogue about reimagining skills and mindsets and repositioning the curiosity, creativity and collaboration at the heart of music-making. The initiative strives to establish music’s relevance at the center of our communities and to develop curricular and cocurricular best practices at DePauw that enable our students to live a life of meaning and understanding; make a difference in the world, with special attention to access, inclusivity and awareness; and develop a thriving career.

Dinner and a show! A catered event at M2 in downtown Greencastle, showcasing student-led Arts Organizations at DePauw.

Music Should be Healing

A sound and art installation and soundwalk that uses texts and audio recordings by music students reflecting on their mental health. Participants guide themselves by flashlight through a chaotic maze of recorded and digitally manipulated student voices.

Inside the Eye of the Storm
By: Lily Rutledge, Eston McLeroy, Griffin Chyall, Nicholas Emanuelson, Cam Wallar.
A sound installation in the GCPA that parallels three stages of a hurricane—beauty, disaster, and aftermath—combined with the growing human footprint through three separate recordings. Participants can walk around the installation, focusing on each type of sound, or stand in the center of the installation to hear all the sounds circling around you like a hurricane. The goal of this project is to raise awareness about climate change, eco-disasters, emergency responses, and what we can ultimately do to help.

"The Ensembles Look White"

Participatory art installation. “While white students in the School of Music get to learn, create and perform music free of worry about experiencing racial discrimination, their POC peers do not have this privilege.
The paint on this canvas was painted by any and all members of the school of music, who were given freedom to express themselves, representing the worry-free music creation that is enjoyed and experienced by student and faculty musicians.
The words, however, are anonymously sourced from students of color describing their experiences within the School of Music.”

Applied Lessons for Community Members
Open to learners of all ages, DePauw University musicians provide one-on-one lessons in strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, and voice. If you are a student musician interested in teaching lessons OR a community member interested in taking lessons, please click below for more information.

Community Events @ Music on the Square
We host a variety of educational and fun events for the entire Greencastle community at Music on the Square, our downtown Greencastle performance space. Click below for more information.

Middle School Jazz & Youth Strings Program
The partnership between the DePauw School of Music and Tzouanakis (TZ) Intermediate School has provided more than 600 students with violin lessons free of charge. Every TZ fourth-grader receives nine lessons across the semester during school hours.
The DePauw School of Music and Greencastle Middle School provides 6-8 graders with the opportunity to explore their own creativity by learning to improvise and perform in a jazz band.
